After the gig

If I bump into successful singers and conversation ensues, I sometimes ask them for a bit of advice for a younger singer starting out their career.

I remember meeting a fantastic tenor at a day job once.  He had just received some phenomenal press in the NYC papers and I complimented him on his success.  He said, "When you get a good review, clean your bathroom."

It was practical advice.  It's all swell to get good press or to enjoy that awesome feeling after some sort of special event.  The point was, according to my colleague, don't forget that life still has to continue on.

About a week ago, I got a great review in Opera News.  I cleaned my bathroom.  Today, I made my solo debut at Carnegie Hall.  My bathroom was already clean, but as I walked through the door, I was greeted by my daughter with a dirty diaper.

I think that will suffice.  I wonder if I am living up to my friend's advice?
